CASE STUDY: Increased Mill-Direct Shipments

FACILITY: Folding Carton Plant LOCATION: Midwest United States

CHALLENGE

Scrap material that could be sold mill-direct instead is being loaded onto local trucks, as per the plant’s processes. This prevents a percentage of the total scrap from being part of the mill-direct shipments, thus resulting in a lower overall return for scrap.

WILMINGTON PAPER RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Working with plant personnel and plant  management on process improvements as part of The Program™, material grading was improved to create a more specific system to identify scrap grades.

  • Shipping procedures at the plant were evaluated and adjusted to maximize mill-direct shipments.

THE PROGRAM™ RESULTS

The plant increased its percentage of scrap material that shipped mill-direct, creating a significant monthly revenue enhancement.

THE NUMBERS

Mill-direct shipments increased significantly. From 15% of its materials at the beginning of the year to well over 50% by mid-year, allowing for a higher overall return.
